What is an umbrella company?

An umbrella company is a PAYE payroll service for contractors. The contractor becomes an employee of the umbrella company and is paid by that company, minus deductions including Income Tax, National Insurance Contributions (NIC) and Apprenticeship Levy. Using an umbrella company is a quick and easy way to get paid as a contractor.
